Upcoming Walking Tour from the Institute of Architecture & Art “Classical Echoes in Oak Hill Cemetery” Sunday June 8th, 10:30 am-12pm pm, starting at the Oak Hill Cemetery Gatehouse. Since its founding, Oak Hill has been the final resting place of historical personages from government, business, politics, the arts, law, and the military, and interments continue today. After a brief history of the cemetery, this walking tour of our grounds will highlight some of the Classical echoes found in the architecture and sculpture of Oak Hill, for example the Van Ness Mausoleum, that was designed as a replica of the Temple of Vesta in Rome. Featured monuments will also shed light on connections between Oak Hill and the adaptation of classical art and architecture in the federal buildings of Washington, D.C. Laura Thoms from Oak Hill Cemetery, Robert Bell from Bell Design, Inc., and John Mahshie of the ICAA will be conducting the tour. Link to register HERE.
