Upcoming Lecture from the Institute of Architecture & Art  “Classical Echoes in Oak Hill Cemetery:” Thursday Feb 6th, 6-8 pm, The Georgetown Club, light refreshments will be served. Since its founding, Oak Hill has been the final resting place of historical personages from government, business, politics, the arts, law, and the military, and interments continue today. After a brief history of the cemetery, this talk will highlight some of the Classical echoes found in the architecture and sculpture of Oak Hill, for example the Van Ness Mausoleum, that was designed as a replica of the Temple of Vesta in Rome. Featured monuments will also shed light on connections between Oak Hill and the adaptation of classical art and architecture in the federal buildings of Washington, D.C. The talk will be given by Elise A. Friedland, Associate Professor of Classics and Art History, George Washington University with a short introduction from Laura Thoms, Archivist & Collection Manager, Oak Hill Cemetery. Register HERE
