Chapel Café Book Club

We are excited to announce that the second Chapel Café Book Club will take place on Wednesday, March 11th, 2020 at 7:00pm in the historic Renwick Chapel. The book read is, Behind Rebel Lines by Seymour Reit, the incredible story of Emma Edmonds, a Civil War Spy.

Oak Hill Cemetery is the final resting place of many Civil War spies whose stories are rarely told. In 1861, when war erupted between the States, President Lincoln made an impassioned plea for volunteers. Determined not to remain on the sidelines, Emma Edmonds cropped her hair, donned men’s clothing, and enlisted in the Union Army. Posing in turn as a slave, peddler, washerwoman, and fop, Emma
became a cunning master of disguise, risking discovery and death at every turn behind Confederate lines.

Judi Cochran, our Foundation Board Member, will lead an interactive discussion with the participants.
