The American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the only organization representing the entire scope of the museum community, recently selected a new cohort of organizations to participate in its 2023 Museum Assessment Program, including Oak Hill Cemetery. Since its inception in 1981, the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) has helped more than 5,000 small and mid-sized museums of all types strengthen operations, plan for the future, and meet standards. Oak Hill is undergoing an Organizational institutional assessment as we prepare for museum accreditation. The assessment is grounded in AAM’s Core Standards: Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion (DEAI) issues as they relate to the assessment focus; both functional and strategic aspects of our operations, and focused learning modules and action plans; and a peer-reviewed site visit. We hope to gain clarity on our institutional roadmap and strategic plan, see positive impacts to our visitor experience and community partnerships, grow in our ability to identify our strengths and challenges, and gain valuable assistance with updating museum policy, and successes in fundraising. MAP is supported through a cooperative agreement between the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the American Alliance of Museums.
