DESCRIPTION:Candlelight listening party at the Oak Hill Cemetery Renwick Chapel in Georgetown for the new Mississippi Records release: Souvenirs by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru hosted by Baby Alcatraz and the Oak Hill Cemetery Preservation Foundation. Doors at 5:30pm\, Music at 6:30pm. Event is free but capacity is limited\, so registration is required. Register here. \nIn lieu of a ticket fee\, donations to the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Foundation can be made here. The Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Foundation provides music education to children in underserved communities through music scholarships\, camps\, and other programs. \nSouvenirs is an archival release capturing rare vocal performances recorded in the late 1970’s and early 80’s amid political turmoil in Ethiopa. The Addis-Abba born nun\, composer and musician used her music to give back to her community. The money she made from albums and concerts went to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church\, orphanages and others who were displaced by war at home and abroad. She began writing music in the 1940’s and continued composing until her death last March just before her 100th birthday. Last November the Kennedy Center honored her with the program Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru:100 Years of a Brilliant Composer. You can watch the film of this performance online. There will be a champagne toast before the reading. Saunders will sign books after the reading. Reserve your tickets today. \nTICKETS \nThe recipient of a 2006 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship\, George Saunders won the Man Booker Prize in 2017 for his novel Lincoln in the Bardo which is set on the grounds of Oak Hill Cemetery. In 2023 Saunders was awarded the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction at the National Book Festival. Lincoln in the Bardo\, which Colson Whitehead called “A luminous feat of generosity and humanism\,” inspires hundreds of visitors each year to come to Oak Hill to visit the Carroll Mausoleum where Willie Lincoln was interred from 1862-1865 and reflect upon this moving story. SUMMARY:The Bells & Historic Photos of DC with the Library of Congress & Old Time DC
DESCRIPTION:Many of the most interesting turn of the century images of Oak Hill are from the Bell family (lots 498W & 6262E) In the 1860s Bell & Bros Studios on Pennsylvania Ave\, took some of the most iconic early photographs of DC\, including some of the earliest pictures we have of the grounds at Oak Hill. A daguerreotype of Nephi Bell was embedded in the family monument at Oak Hill when he was interred in 1862. In 1873 youngest son Charles left Bell & Bros and started his own CM Bell Studios\, becoming one of the most popular portrait studios of his time: photographing presidents\, dignitaries\, popular figures\, church leaders and a wide array of upper and middle-class Washingtonians. The Library of Congress holds the CM Bell Collection of over 30\,000 of images from his studio. Join us for a talk about the Bells and the CM Bell Collection by Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Librarian Jonathan Eaker. We will look at historic images of Oak Hill and its residents\, as well as famous and interesting images from the CM Bell Collection\, while learning more about this important studio and early photography in Washington. We will be joined by DCPL Librarian and Old Time DC curator\, Ryan Shepard who will share other historic photographs of Oak Hil and early Washington. Oak Hill Archivist Laura Thoms will share stereoscopes and photographs from the Oak Hill Archives. Bring your questions about research and care of the old photographs in your personal collections for a Q&A about research resources and best display practices after the talk. DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Keckly gained a measure of fame in her own lifetime as an African American seamstress and owner of a successful dressmaking establishment in Washington\, D.C.\, as the modiste and confidante of first lady Mary Lincoln\, as a founder of the Contraband Relief Association\, and as the author of Behind the Scenes. Or\, Thirty Years a Slave\, and Four Years in the White House (1868). If you’ve read George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo\, set at Oak Hill\, you’ve read excerpts from Behind the Scenes. Now learn more about Elizabeth Keckly\, and how her own death was not the end of the story. When Keckly died in 1907\, the tombstone at her grave at Harmony Cemetery should have permanently marked her final resting place\, but Elizabeth Keckly’s grave came to mirror its occupant’s place in history. Based on her essay in the book Final Resting Places: Reflections on the Meaning of Civil War Graves\, Michelle A. Krowl will discuss the life and afterlife of Elizabeth Keckly\, and the recent reclamation of both Keckly’s name and gravesite. Michelle A. DESCRIPTION:Significant Tree Walk with Historical Ecologist Michael Gaige on Sunday November 17\, 10am-12pm \nJoin us as we explore Oak Hill’s tree-scape looking at the cemetery’s oldest trees. We will discuss how to recognize them\, identify different species\, and what the cemetery may have looked like in the early 19th century. In 2024 the Oak Hill Cemetery Historic Preservation Foundation commissioned a Significant Tree Report of the grounds to understand our historical ecology even before the cemetery was created. This is a focused approach to understanding the property’s history including a field inventory and archival research. This work will serve as a foundation for our emerging Landscape Archive as well as our Landscape Master Plan to ensure that we document\, understand and can preserve our historic tree canopy. Michael Gaige is an independent consulting ecologist based in upstate New York. His work explores the intersection of nature\, culture\, and history at the landscape level. Michael works with organizations\, private landowners\, and design teams on park and landscape projects\, historical ecology inventories\, and conservation planning for natural areas. He wrote detailed historical and landscape inventories for the Oak Spring Garden Foundation main site and its adjacent Rokeby farm. DESCRIPTION:Oak Hill Cemetery is proud to announce a Book Talk from Dr. Rose Neal\, author\, about the life and legacy of Oak Hill Notable\, E.D.E.N. Southworth. \nJoin us at the Renwick Chapel on Friday\, October 17 at 6:30 pm for this lively and educational event! \n  \nUncover the legacy of E.D.E.N. Southworth\, the trailblazing novelist whose daring heroines\nand progressive ideals captivated a generation\, only to be forgotten by history—until now. \nE.D.E.N. Southworth (Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte) was one of the nineteenth century’s most\nprolific and successful authors\, with more novels to her credit than Nathaniel Hawthorne\, Herman\nMelville\, and Mark Twain combined. Readers loved her feisty heroines who rode horses\, shot\npistols\, captured notorious villains\, became sea captains\, and had other such grand adventures. In\n1859\, countless readers named their daughters Capitola after their favorite character in\nSouthworth’s best-selling The Hidden Hand. \nIn her fifty-plus novels\, Southworth wrote about unspeakable topics for the time\, including\nalcoholism\, domestic violence\, poverty\, and capital punishment—all nicely tucked away within the\npages of her “domestic fiction.” Despite being raised in a slave-owning family\, she wrote for The\nNational Era (a known abolitionist magazine)\, supported emancipation\, and encouraged her\nlongtime friend Harriet Beecher Stowe to publish Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Southworth also advocated\nfor better education for girls and better living conditions for the poor and joined the early\nwomen’s rights movement. \nAlthough Southworth achieved international fame in her lifetime\, knowledge of her work virtually\ndisappeared as readers were drawn to the new Modernist literature. Because Southworth never\ndiscussed her progressive views publicly—a necessity as a single mother who made a living by her\npen—she has long been incorrectly categorized as being against causes she in fact supported.\nNow\, by combining details from Southworth’s novels\, newspapers\, and personal letters\, Rose Neal\nhas set the record straight\, piecing together the fascinating life of a woman who was as\ndetermined as the heroines she created. \nAbout the Author:\nAfter more than twelve years of researching E.D.E.N. Southworth\, Rose Neal\, PhD\, is one of\nthe preeminent scholars on the author’s work and life. In 2012\, she finished her master’s\nthesis on Southworth before embarking on a doctorate in literature from Swansea University\nin Wales\, where she successfully defended her dissertation on Southworth’s impact on female\neducation. Dr. Neal has also presented about the author at professional conferences and\nlibraries.\nAfter a twenty-plus-year career in teaching\, both at the high school and university levels\, Dr.\nNeal retired and is now devoting herself full-time to a second career as a writer. In addition to\nher love of research and storytelling\, she enjoys traveling with her husband\, Chris\, and\nspending time in her garden. She lives in Edmond\, Oklahoma.
