DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce that the second Chapel Café Book Club will take place on Wednesday\, March 11th\, 2020 at 7:00pm in the historic Renwick Chapel. The book read is\, Behind Rebel Lines by Seymour Reit\, the incredible story of Emma Edmonds\, a Civil War Spy. \nOak Hill Cemetery is the final resting place of many Civil War spies whose stories are rarely told. In 1861\, when war erupted between the States\, President Lincoln made an impassioned plea for volunteers. Determined not to remain on the sidelines\, Emma Edmonds cropped her hair\, donned men’s clothing\, and enlisted in the Union Army. Posing in turn as a slave\, peddler\, washerwoman\, and fop\, Emma\nbecame a cunning master of disguise\, risking discovery and death at every turn behind Confederate lines. \nJudi Cochran\, our Foundation Board Member\, will lead an interactive discussion with the participants. \nTo sign-up email: loisbrown@oakhillcemeterydc.org \n* Light refreshments will be served compliments of the Foundation.

For twenty-five years the Lincolns forged opposing temperaments into a tolerant\, loving marriage. Even as the nation suffered secession and civil war\, Mary experienced the tragedies of losing three of her four children and then her husband. An insanity trial orchestrated by her surviving son led to her confinement in an asylum. \nMary Todd Lincoln is still often portrayed in one dimension\, as the stereotype of the best-hated faults of all women. Here her life is restored for us whole. We will discuss Mary Todd Lincoln. Two-years later the couple divorced. After a series of failed romances\, Huguette began to withdraw from society–first living with her mother in a kind of Grey Gardens isolation then as a modern-day Miss Havisham\, spending her days in a vast apartment overlooking Central Park\, eating crackers\, and watching The Flintstones with only servants for company. \nAll her money and all her real estate could not protect her in her later life from being manipulated by shady hangers-on and hospitals that were only too happy to admit (and bill) a healthy woman. DESCRIPTION:Candlelight listening party at the Oak Hill Cemetery Renwick Chapel in Georgetown for the new Mississippi Records release: Souvenirs by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru hosted by Baby Alcatraz and the Oak Hill Cemetery Preservation Foundation. Doors at 5:30pm\, Music at 6:30pm. Event is free but capacity is limited\, so registration is required. Register here. \nIn lieu of a ticket fee\, donations to the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Foundation can be made here. The Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Foundation provides music education to children in underserved communities through music scholarships\, camps\, and other programs. \nSouvenirs is an archival release capturing rare vocal performances recorded in the late 1970’s and early 80’s amid political turmoil in Ethiopa. The Addis-Abba born nun\, composer and musician used her music to give back to her community. The money she made from albums and concerts went to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church\, orphanages and others who were displaced by war at home and abroad. She began writing music in the 1940’s and continued composing until her death last March just before her 100th birthday. Last November the Kennedy Center honored her with the program Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru:100 Years of a Brilliant Composer. You can watch the film of this performance online. There will be a champagne toast before the reading. Saunders will sign books after the reading. Reserve your tickets today. \nTICKETS \nThe recipient of a 2006 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship\, George Saunders won the Man Booker Prize in 2017 for his novel Lincoln in the Bardo which is set on the grounds of Oak Hill Cemetery. In 2023 Saunders was awarded the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction at the National Book Festival. Lincoln in the Bardo\, which Colson Whitehead called “A luminous feat of generosity and humanism\,” inspires hundreds of visitors each year to come to Oak Hill to visit the Carroll Mausoleum where Willie Lincoln was interred from 1862-1865 and reflect upon this moving story.
