SUMMARY:A Special Winter Event – A Virtual Fireside Chat with President\, George Hill
DESCRIPTION:We are not letting social distancing get in the way of a good book\, good friends\, and good a time! \nThe Chapel Café Book Club is hosting a special winter event! A virtual Fireside Chat event with George Hill\, our President. He will lead the interactive discussion. We are excited to announce our book choice\, The Phantom of Fifth Avenue: The Mysterious Life and Scandalous Death of Heiress Huguette Clark\, by Meryl Gordon. To register for this FREE event\, please email loisbrown@oakhillcemeterydc.org.  \nBorn in 1906\, Huguette Clark grew up in her family’s 121-room Beaux Arts mansion in New York and was one of the leading celebrities of her day. Her father William Andrews Clark\, was a copper magnate\, the second richest man in America\, and not above bribing his way into the Senate. \nHuguette attended the coronation of King George V. and at twenty-two with a personal fortune of $50 million to her name\, she married a Princeton man and childhood friend William MacDonald Gower. Two-years later the couple divorced. After a series of failed romances\, Huguette began to withdraw from society–first living with her mother in a kind of Grey Gardens isolation then as a modern-day Miss Havisham\, spending her days in a vast apartment overlooking Central Park\, eating crackers\, and watching The Flintstones with only servants for company. \nAll her money and all her real estate could not protect her in her later life from being manipulated by shady hangers-on and hospitals that were only too happy to admit (and bill) a healthy woman. But what happened to Huguette that turned a vivacious\, young socialite into a recluse? \nRead or listen to the book and be prepared for an exciting virtual interactive Fireside Chat

SUMMARY:Chapel Café Virtual Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, our virtual Chapel Cafe Book Club will be postpone to later this summer. We are sorry for the delay and appreciate your understanding and flexibility. Our NEW date is July 9th\, 2020 at 7:00pm. \nWe are excited to announce our book choice\, Mary Todd Lincoln: A Biography: By (author) Jean Harvey Baker. A definitive biography of Mary Todd Lincoln beautifully conveys her tumultuous life and times. A privileged daughter of the proud clan that founded Lexington\, Kentucky\, Mary fell into a stormy romance with the raw Illinois attorney Abraham Lincoln. For twenty-five years the Lincolns forged opposing temperaments into a tolerant\, loving marriage. Even as the nation suffered secession and civil war\, Mary experienced the tragedies of losing three of her four children and then her husband. An insanity trial orchestrated by her surviving son led to her confinement in an asylum. \nMary Todd Lincoln is still often portrayed in one dimension\, as the stereotype of the best-hated faults of all women. Here her life is restored for us whole. We will discuss Mary Todd Lincoln. Oak Hill Cemetery is the final resting place of many Civil War women whose stories are rarely told. \nJudi Cochran\, our Foundation Board Member\, will lead the virtual discussion. Read the book and be prepared for an exciting virtual interactive discussion! To sign-up for this digital book club email\, loisbrown@oakhillcemeterydc.org. The book is available locally at Politics and Prose bookstore in all formats.
